The Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 have crowned Japan as the best country in the world for the third consecutive year, with Greece and Portugal following close behind. The annual rankings — based on votes from global travellers — celebrate destinations that balance authentic cultural experiences, natural beauty, and modern comfort.
Japan impressed voters with its seamless blend of tradition and innovation, its rich culinary scene, and the renowned hospitality of cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, which were also named top global destinations. Greece made an impressive leap from tenth to second place, driven by its island resorts, Mediterranean cuisine, and historic charm. Portugal, rounding out the top three, earned praise for its coastal beauty, medieval towns, and UNESCO-listed sites.
The rest of the Top 10 Best Countries in the World 2025 are:
4️⃣ Italy – for its unmatched art, heritage, and architecture.
5️⃣ Spain – for its diverse landscapes and cuisine.
6️⃣ Turkey – recognized for its warm hospitality and sustainable tourism efforts.
7️⃣ Ireland – beloved for its lush countryside and friendly locals.
8️⃣ Croatia – for its coastal beauty and Roman-era landmarks.
9️⃣ France – offering far more than Paris, with its vineyards, beaches, and gastronomy.
🔟 Canada – the only North American country in the top ten, lauded for its natural splendour and multicultural identity.
India, ranked 14th, was celebrated for its spiritual depth, cultural richness, and dynamic modern cities. From the serenity of Rishikesh to the regal grandeur of Jaipur and the bustling creativity of Mumbai, travellers highlighted India’s unique ability to “weave together spirituality, culture, and modernity.”
This year’s rankings also reflect a shift in global travel trends — with more travellers seeking authentic, local experiences over luxury, choosing family-run accommodations, slow travel, and immersive connections with local communities.
Emerging destinations such as Dominica and Bhutan also gained attention for their commitment to sustainable tourism and unspoiled landscapes, signaling a growing preference for eco-friendly, meaningful travel.
Whether it’s Japan’s futuristic cities, Greece’s sunlit islands, or India’s timeless blend of tradition and transformation — 2025’s best countries are redefining what it means to travel the world.
