Police have dismantled an online counterfeit money operation that used Instagram accounts to sell fake currency across Canada, leading to multiple arrests in the GTA.
Halton Regional Police Service launched Project Mirage last August after discovering two Instagram accounts advertising counterfeit cash disguised as “film prop money.” Investigators say buyers could place orders online using credit cards, with shipments sent nationwide.
Authorities traced the source of the operation and allege the scheme generated more than $60,000 in illegal sales before being shut down.
Search warrants executed at three residences in Toronto uncovered large quantities of counterfeit currency, production tools, packaging materials, and drugs.
Six individuals from Toronto now face charges, including fraud, dealing in counterfeit money, and drug trafficking offences. Police are continuing the investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
