Infosys Faces Lawsuit as Cognizant Alleges Trade Secret Theft

Infosys, India’s second-largest software exporter, is facing serious allegations from Cognizant Technology Solutions, which has accused the company of stealing trade secrets related to its healthcare software, TriZetto. The lawsuit, filed by Cognizant’s subsidiary Cognizant TriZetto in a Texas federal court, claims that Infosys misused proprietary healthcare insurance software to develop its own competing product.

According to Cognizant’s court filing, Infosys allegedly misappropriated trade secrets from TriZetto’s Facets and QNXT software—widely used by healthcare insurance companies for administrative automation. The complaint states that Infosys repackaged TriZetto’s data into a product called “Test Cases for Facets,” leveraging confidential information it originally accessed under non-disclosure agreements (NDAAs).

Cognizant’s legal response, submitted on February 7, describes Infosys as being “caught red-handed” in misappropriating TriZetto’s trade secrets. The IT firm further claims that when asked to allow an audit of its use of TriZetto’s data—an action explicitly permitted under the NDAAs—Infosys refused to comply.

This legal battle is the latest escalation in an ongoing corporate conflict between the two IT giants. It began when Infosys accused Cognizant of poaching its senior executives, including former Infosys president and deputy COO Ravi Kumar S, who is now Cognizant’s CEO. The dispute has since intensified, with both companies trading allegations over unfair business practices.

Infosys has not issued an official statement on the latest claims, but the lawsuit seeks court intervention to compel Infosys to disclose all documents related to its handling of TriZetto’s proprietary information.

The case also reflects a broader trend of legal battles in the Indian IT sector over executive poaching and intellectual property disputes. Wipro, another major player, has filed lawsuits against two of its former executives who later joined Cognizant, adding another layer to the competitive tensions among top IT firms.
