Canada Post and Peel Regional Police are investigating after several mailboxes were vandalized at a community mailbox site on Ravenscliffe Court in Brampton earlier this month.
Carlos Martins, a longtime resident of Ravenscliffe Court, said he was “livid” when he discovered his mailbox had been pried open and emptied on a recent Tuesday evening. “There were quite a few latches on the ground as well,” Martins noted, expressing concerns about potential identity theft.
The vandalism incident, reported to police on March 11, occurred in the Chinguacousy Road and Williams Parkway area. Martins emphasized this was not the first occurrence; similar incidents took place last summer, prompting him to advocate for moving the mailbox to a more visible location and upgrading its security features, including adding surveillance.
Canada Post spokesperson Lisa Liu confirmed the vandalism incidents but did not disclose specific details due to the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the importance of mail security.
Peel Police spokesperson Constable Sarah Patten confirmed the incident, noting that the vandalism involved unknown suspects and stolen mail. She encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities immediately.
Prevention Tips from Peel Police:
- Collect mail daily.
- Suspend mail delivery when away.
- Avoid sending cash through mail.
- Arrange for trusted individuals to collect mail during extended absences.
- Report suspicious activities promptly.
