The Toronto International Film Festival is rolling out the red carpet this week for its milestone 50th edition, bringing with it more than 700 actors and filmmakers from around the world. Running from September 4 to 14 in the heart of the city’s entertainment district, the festival will showcase 291 films, including 209 features, 10 primetime selections, six classics and 66 shorts.
While TIFF has long been celebrated as a launchpad for some of the year’s most talked-about films, the festival also doubles as one of the best opportunities for star spotting. This year’s lineup of celebrities is one of the most dazzling in recent memory.
Keanu Reeves and Aziz Ansari are expected at the premiere of Good Fortune on September 6, while Angelina Jolie will attend Couture the following day. Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera arrive with The Lost Bus on September 5, and Sydney Sweeney will step out for Christy the same afternoon. Ryan Reynolds, Catherine O’Hara, and Colin Hanks will help open the festival with the premiere of John Candy: I Like Me. Reynolds will also participate in a special “In Conversation With…” event on September 5.
Other major draws include Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson with The Smashing Machine, Natalie Portman for Arco, Scarlett Johansson directing Eleanor the Great, Ralph Fiennes in The Choral, and Dustin Hoffman alongside Leo Woodall in Tuner. Daniel Craig is set to attend the highly anticipated Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, while Steven Soderbergh and Baz Luhrmann are bringing their latest directorial efforts.
The roster goes on with Jodie Foster, Chris Evans, Vincent Cassel, Charli XCX, Method Man, Idris Elba, Riz Ahmed, Russell Crowe, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Eugene and Dan Levy, Amanda Seyfried, Kirsten Dunst, Brendan Fraser, Elizabeth Olsen, Rose Byrne, Seal, and William H. Macy among the many big names expected.
With its mix of premieres, star power, and industry buzz, TIFF’s 50th anniversary promises to be one of the festival’s most memorable years yet, cementing Toronto’s place as one of the world’s great film capitals.
