Hideki Matsuyama Sets PGA Tour Record with 35-Under Victory at Kapalua

Hideki Matsuyama opened the 2025 PGA Tour season with a historic performance, claiming victory at The Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua Golf Club in Hawaii. Matsuyama’s record-breaking 35-under-par 257 set a new benchmark for 72-hole scoring on the PGA Tour, surpassing Cameron Smith’s previous 34-under set at Kapalua in 2022.

The Japanese star capped off his incredible week with an 8-under 65 in the final round, securing a three-shot win over Collin Morikawa. His decisive birdie on the 18th hole marked his 35th hole at birdie or better for the tournament, another PGA Tour record.

“It feels amazing to start the season like this,” Matsuyama said after the win, his 11th PGA Tour title and third victory in the past 10 months.

Matsuyama showed consistency and poise throughout the tournament, displaying impeccable ball striking and calm under pressure. His understated fist pump on the 18th green was the only outward sign of celebration during a dominant week.

Morikawa, despite not carding a single round over 66, had to settle for second place. “It’s tough to lose when you play this well, but Hideki was just on another level,” Morikawa remarked.

Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario, led the Canadian contingent with a strong showing, finishing tied for fifth at 24-under, 11 strokes behind Matsuyama.

  • Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ont.): Tied for 13th at 22-under.
  • Adam Hadwin (Abbotsford, B.C.): Finished 29th at 18-under.
  • Nick Taylor (Abbotsford, B.C.): Tied for 48th at 11-under.

Conners’ top-five finish continues a trend of strong performances by Canadian golfers as they head into the 2025 season with momentum.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua provided an ideal setting for a scoring fest, with calm winds and soft conditions enabling players to go low. Matsuyama’s remarkable achievement highlights the scoring potential on weeks like this, making his performance even more memorable.

As the PGA Tour season kicks off, Matsuyama’s record-setting win sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting year in professional golf.
