3,200 MEC Kids’ Snowsuits Recalled Over Potential Mould Exposure
Mountain Equipment Company (MEC), a leading Canadian outdoor gear retailer, has issued a recall for certain children’s snowsuits due to potential mould contamination. The recall affects the Toaster and Toaster Bunting snowsuits sold between August and December 2024, with approximately 3,200 units sold across Canada.
Health Canada warned that exposure to mould can pose health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, mould allergies, or lung damage. As of February 11, MEC has received two reports of health-related issues, though the company has not confirmed if these are directly linked to the mould contamination.
The recalled snowsuits, designed to be insulated and waterproof with dual front zippers, were available in a variety of colours. The Toaster suit, intended for children aged three to seven, came in shades such as Salmonberry, Purple Orchid, Summit, Black POW, and Dark Forest Mountain Snow. The Toaster Bunting suit, for children six to 24 months, was offered in Summit Winter Critters, Salmonberry, Wild Berry, and Earthen Gold.
Only products with purchase order (PO) numbers 666483 and 666503 are included in the recall. Customers can locate the PO number on the product tag: for the Toaster snowsuits, the tag is on the central back inside seam, and for the Toaster Bunting snowsuits, it is on the inside left hip.
MEC is urging customers to immediately stop using the affected snowsuits and return them to any MEC retail store for a full refund or exchange. The company has not yet provided further details on how the mould contamination occurred or the specific health risks involved.
