Haryana Man Shot Dead in California After Objecting to Public Urination

The family of a young man from Haryana has confirmed his tragic death in the United States after he was shot while working as a security guard at a California store.

The victim, Kapil, aged 26 and a native of Jind district, had been living in the U.S. for the past three years. According to local accounts, the incident occurred when Kapil objected to a man urinating outside the store. An argument followed, after which the accused pulled out a firearm and fatally shot him.

Suresh Kumar Gautam, sarpanch of Barah Kalan village, told PTI that Kapil had migrated to the U.S. through the “donkey route,” crossing the jungles of Panama and scaling the Mexico border wall before entering America. Though arrested initially, he was later released after legal proceedings and had since found work as a security guard. His family had spent nearly ₹45 lakh to finance his journey.

Kapil is survived by his parents and two sisters. His father, a farmer with a small landholding, now faces the devastating loss of his only son. The family has appealed to the Centre and the Haryana government for assistance in bringing Kapil’s body back to his village for final rites.

This incident comes against the backdrop of several recent killings of Indian-origin individuals in the U.S., including the May shooting of a shopkeeper during a robbery and the March murder of a 24-year-old woman and her father in Virginia.

Community leaders in Jind have urged both state and central authorities to take up the matter with U.S. officials to ensure justice and extend immediate support to Kapil’s grieving family.
