Hamilton Police are investigating a disturbing act of vandalism involving a school bus associated with an Islamic educational institution, an incident authorities believe was motivated by hate.
The investigation centres on a school bus owned by the Waterdown Islamic School that was allegedly targeted between May 26 and May 30. According to police, unknown individuals gained unauthorized access to the vehicle while it was parked in the city’s east end.
Investigators say the suspects caused extensive damage inside the bus by discharging a fire extinguisher throughout the vehicle, vandalizing seats, and stealing property. More concerning, police report that anti-Muslim graffiti was left inside the bus, prompting the involvement of the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit.
While the school itself is located in the Waterdown area near Highways 5 and 6, the bus was reportedly targeted at a separate location on Mohawk Road East, approximately 18 kilometres from the school grounds.
Police have classified the incident as hate-motivated mischief and emphasized the broader impact such acts can have on communities. Authorities noted that incidents targeting faith-based organizations often create fear and anxiety beyond the immediate victims, affecting students, families, staff, and members of the wider community.
Hamilton Police stated that hate-motivated crimes and incidents are treated with the utmost seriousness and that investigators are committed to identifying and holding those responsible accountable. The service added that acts of intolerance and discrimination have no place in the community and that every resident deserves to feel safe regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or background.
The incident has raised concerns about the continued presence of hate-related acts directed at religious communities and highlights the importance of fostering respect, inclusion, and understanding across diverse populations.
Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance and are asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during the relevant time period, or who may have information that could assist the investigation, to contact Hamilton Police.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced at this time.
