Windsor, Ont., July 27: The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to motorists on Monday, marking a major milestone in Canada–United States transportation and trade after years of construction and months of political controversy surrounding the project.
Spanning the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, the new six-lane international crossing is expected to strengthen the movement of goods, travellers and commercial traffic between the two countries.
The bridge opens following months of diplomatic tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump questioned aspects of the project earlier this year.
In a social media post in February, Trump argued that the United States should receive compensation before permitting the bridge to begin operations. He also claimed the approximately $6.4 billion project contained little American content, a characterization that Canadian officials disputed.
Subsequent discussions between the two governments resulted in adjustments concerning the sharing of bridge revenues, helping clear the way for the opening.
Canada held an official ceremony last week to commemorate the completion of the project.
However, a planned joint celebration with American officials was cancelled amid renewed trade tensions following Washington’s threat to impose additional tariffs on certain Canadian products.
U.S. officials have said the proposed tariffs are linked to disagreements over provincial restrictions on American alcoholic beverages, Canada’s supply-managed dairy industry and quotas affecting imports of U.S.-made vehicles.
Named in honour of legendary Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, widely known as “Mr. Hockey,” the bridge is expected to become one of North America’s most important transportation corridors.
The crossing provides the first new international bridge between Windsor and Detroit in nearly a century and offers an alternative to the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which has long served as the principal crossing for commercial trucks travelling between Canada and the United States.
More than 70 per cent of Canada’s exports are destined for the U.S. market, making the Windsor–Detroit corridor one of the busiest and most strategically important trade gateways on the continent.
Business groups have welcomed the opening, saying the new crossing is expected to reduce congestion, improve supply chain reliability and lower transportation costs for manufacturers, exporters and logistics companies operating on both sides of the border.
Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge began in 2018, but completion was delayed by several factors, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
With traffic now flowing across the new span, government officials and industry leaders expect the bridge to play a vital role in supporting bilateral trade, tourism and economic growth while enhancing the resilience of one of North America’s busiest commercial border crossings.
The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents a significant investment in Canada’s transportation infrastructure and is expected to strengthen cross-border commerce for decades to come, even as broader trade issues between Ottawa and Washington continue to be negotiated.
