London: Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja, the Indian-British billionaire industrialist and chairman of the Hinduja Group, has passed away at the age of 85, British lawmaker Lord Rami Ranger announced on Tuesday.
In a statement shared on social media, Lord Ranger, a member of the UK House of Lords, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his longtime friend, describing Hinduja as “one of the most gracious, humble, and loyal friends” whose death “marks the end of an era.”
“With a heavy heart, I share the tragic loss of our beloved friend, Mr. GP Hinduja, who has departed for his heavenly abode,” Lord Ranger said. “He was a guiding force and a well-wisher of the community. His commitment to India, his sense of humour, and his support for good causes were unmatched. He has left behind a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace. Om Shanti.”
Known universally as GP Hinduja, he was the co-chairman of the Hinduja Group, one of the world’s largest diversified conglomerates with business interests spanning automotive, banking, energy, real estate, healthcare, and technology.
Hinduja, who topped the UK Sunday Times Rich List as the country’s wealthiest individual for seven consecutive years, was widely admired for his business acumen, philanthropy, and role in strengthening India-UK economic ties.
Born in India in 1940, Gopichand Hinduja graduated from Jai Hind College, Mumbai in 1959. He later received honorary doctorates — a Doctor of Law from the University of Westminster and a Doctorate of Economics from London’s Richmond College.
After the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja in 2023, GP Hinduja assumed the role of chairman of the family business empire. Together, the Hinduja brothers transformed their father Parmanand Hinduja’s trading company, founded in 1914, into a global powerhouse employing tens of thousands worldwide.
Hinduja’s leadership helped shape the group into a symbol of global enterprise and Indian entrepreneurship. He was also known for his philanthropic initiatives through the Hinduja Foundation, focusing on education, healthcare, and social welfare.
Gopichand Hinduja is remembered as a visionary businessman, a bridge between East and West, and a respected figure in the global business community whose influence and generosity left a lasting mark on generations.
