Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is hosting G7 interior and security ministers in Ottawa for two days of high-level talks aimed at confronting some of the world’s most urgent security challenges, including transnational organized crime. The meetings bring together counterparts from across the G7 and key international partners at a moment when global criminal networks, synthetic drug threats and migrant smuggling operations are becoming increasingly sophisticated and interconnected.
The agenda is expected to focus heavily on the rising dangers posed by synthetic drugs, expanding smuggling routes, and cases of transnational repression that target dissidents across borders. Officials will also examine new strategies to confront the online dimensions of terrorism and violent extremism, cybercrime, and the growing problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse facilitated through digital platforms.
Magnus Brunner, European commissioner for internal affairs and migration, emphasized that no country can manage these rapidly evolving threats alone. He noted that Europe is strengthening cooperation with trusted partners such as the G7 as it undertakes the most ambitious migration and asylum reforms in EU history.
Anandasangaree is scheduled to hold a news conference Sunday following the conclusion of the meetings.
