Giorgio Armani, Fashion Visionary Who Redefined Elegance, Dies at 91

Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who revolutionised global fashion with his sleek, unstructured tailoring and turned Milan into a capital of ready-to-wear, has died at the age of 91. His fashion house confirmed the news in a statement, saying Armani passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, after battling an undisclosed illness that had kept him from his June runway shows.

The Armani Group’s tribute described him as the brand’s “inventor, founder and tireless engine,” noting that he continued to work until his final days, shaping collections and overseeing projects with relentless dedication. “Over the years, Giorgio Armani created a vision that expanded from fashion to every aspect of life, anticipating the times with extraordinary clarity and precision,” the statement said.

Respected globally as “Mr. Armani,” he built a fashion empire that spanned clothing, accessories, interior design, and even hospitality, while remaining closely tied to his beloved Milan. His company, now marking its 50th anniversary, will continue under the guidance of his family and employees, committed to the values of independence and integrity he instilled.

Armani had been preparing a major event during Milan Fashion Week later this month to celebrate the half-century of his label. Instead, the city will mourn the loss of a figure who not only defined Italian elegance but also transformed how the world viewed style and sophistication.

A private funeral will be held in accordance with his wishes. A public farewell will be possible at the Armani/Teatro in Milan from September 6 to 7, where mourners can pay their respects.
