MISSISSAUGA, ON – If you’re tired of speeders on your street, Mississauga is offering a new way for residents to take a stand. The city is now providing free “slow down” lawn signs that can be placed on properties to encourage drivers to obey speed limits in residential areas. This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing Vision Zero Action Plan, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Mississauga roadways.
To get your free lawn sign, simply contact 311 (or 905-615-4311 if outside city limits). Residents can place these City-produced signs directly on or in front of their property, provided they do not obstruct the road, median, traffic island, sidewalk, bicycle path, or multi-use trail. Signs must also be placed at least three meters from a fire hydrant and be securely inserted into the ground using only the provided wire frame. The city reminds residents that signs deemed unsafe may be removed or relocated, and advises replacing signs if the wire frame is damaged, the plastic covering is removed, or any other safety issue arises that prevents it from staying secured.
This “Slow Down” sign program is one of several traffic calming measures implemented by the City of Mississauga to enhance road safety, alongside initiatives like Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras in school zones and community safety zones, radar speed signs, and various physical traffic calming devices such as speed humps and raised pedestrian crossings. While the city continues to implement these broader strategies, the new lawn signs offer a direct way for residents to contribute to safer streets in their own neighbourhoods.
