Plans to transfer curbside waste collection from the Region of Peel to the municipalities of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon have been postponed by more than a year, with the new start date now set for October 1, 2027. The delay aligns with the expiration of Peel’s current waste collection contracts, giving all three municipalities more time to prepare for the major operational shift.
The move follows Ontario’s scaled-back decision on dissolving the Region of Peel, which was initially announced in 2023. Instead of full dissolution, the province opted to reassign financial and operational responsibilities for services such as garbage pick-up, roads, and wastewater management directly to the municipalities.
Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon were originally slated to assume control of waste collection in January 2026. However, Peel Regional Council’s updated timeline aims to “properly transition all elements of the service,” including staffing, infrastructure, and financial planning.
Under the new arrangement, the three municipalities will take responsibility for curbside and multi-residential waste collection, while the region will retain oversight of Community Recycling Centres as well as transfer, processing, and disposal services.
Brampton and Caledon are considering a joint approach to manage waste collection, while Mississauga intends to handle the service independently. City officials say the transition will eventually improve service efficiency and give municipalities greater flexibility to meet the needs of their rapidly growing populations.
