G7 Foreign Ministers Meet in Niagara to Reaffirm Support for Ukraine Amid Escalating Russian Attacks

Niagara-on-the-Lake— Top diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) nations convened in southern Ontario today to hear directly from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, as Russia intensifies its campaign against Ukraine’s power infrastructure ahead of winter.

The meeting, hosted by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, comes at a critical time when Russian strikes have caused rolling blackouts across Ukraine and U.S.-led peace efforts have stalled. Anand said the summit will reaffirm the G7’s “unwavering collective support” for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

The two-day gathering in the scenic Niagara region brings together foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, alongside the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs. The ministers posed for an official group photograph before beginning their closed-door sessions at Niagara-on-the-Lake, a symbolic location underscoring Canada’s role as host and facilitator of dialogue among leading democracies.

In addition to addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the ministers are expected to discuss global economic resilience, energy security, and critical minerals, with special attention to the ripple effects of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff and trade policies that have reshaped global commerce.

Anand extended invitations to several key global partners — including Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, and Ukraine — to participate in select sessions aimed at strengthening collaboration on shared security and economic challenges.

“Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and to the defense of democratic values worldwide,” Anand said, emphasizing that the G7’s unity remains crucial amid rising global instability.

The meeting underscores Canada’s growing diplomatic role on the world stage as the G7 continues to balance immediate geopolitical crises with long-term strategies for sustainable energy, trade, and security
