From Jalebis to Burgers: Shafqat Ali MP’s BBQ Showcases Brampton’s Cultural Diversity

On Saturday, August 24th, 2024, Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, organized a highly successful Community BBQ at Chinguacousy Park. The event was attended by thousands of residents from diverse communities across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), embodying the spirit of unity in diversity. The event also saw enthusiastic participation from various community organizations, including senior groups which further enhancing the communal spirit.

Reflecting on the event, MP Shafqat Ali shared his heartfelt sentiments, saying, “I am so humbled and honored by the overwhelming participation of the community in our first annual BBQ at Chinguacousy Park. This event was a true celebration of our diversity, and I am incredibly grateful for the support and love shown by the people of Brampton and beyond.”

The BBQ was a family-friendly affair, featuring a range of activities such as face painting, bouncy castles, cotton candy, and a variety of delicious treats, including hot jalebis, pakoras, samosas, chai, and burgers. Multicultural performances added to the vibrant atmosphere, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the Brampton community.

In a show of strong community support, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown praised the event, stating, “The Community BBQ organized by MP Shafqat Ali is a fantastic example of what makes Brampton so special—our ability to come together, celebrate our diversity, and strengthen our bonds as a community. It was wonderful to see so many residents, including our senior groups, enjoying the festivities and connecting with each other.”

MP Shafqat Ali extended his heartfelt thanks to several key figures who contributed to the success of the event. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Almighty for blessing us with beautiful weather and the opportunity to bring our communities together,” he said. He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who played a crucial role in organizing the BBQ, stating, “This event would not have been possible without our amazing team of volunteers. Their commitment and efforts made this community BBQ a true success story.”

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who made a special appearance at the event, also shared her thoughts on the gathering: “It was an honor to join MP Shafqat Ali and the wonderful people of Brampton at this community BBQ. Events like these are so important because they bring us together, remind us of our shared values, and celebrate the vibrant diversity that makes our country strong.”

In addition to the Deputy Prime Minister and Mayor Patrick Brown, MP Shafqat Ali also expressed his gratitude to his parliamentary colleagues, including Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Hon. Omar Alghabra, Salma Zahid MP, Sonia Sidhu MP, Paul Chiang MP, Rob Oliphant MP, Maninder Sidhu MP, and Hon. Gorbax Singh Malhi, for their presence and support at the event.

The BBQ also featured information booths from numerous nonprofit organizations, providing valuable resources and engaging the community in meaningful ways. MP Shafqat Ali thanked these organizations for their participation and contributions to the community’s well-being.

Gian Paul, Chairperson of the Flower City Friends Club, was among the notable attendees. He expressed his excitement at the event, stating, “I was very thrilled to see members of various communities, including Punjabi, Muslim, South Indian, Chinese, West Indian, Korean, and Vietnamese, coming together to celebrate. This turnout truly reflects the vibrant culture of our great city of Brampton.”

The success of the event was further bolstered by the cooperation of the City of Brampton and the management at Chinguacousy Park. MP Shafqat Ali expressed his appreciation for their assistance, along with that of the Peel Regional Police, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who ensured the safety and smooth operation of the event.

The Community BBQ at Chinguacousy Park is poised to become an annual tradition, continuing to foster unity and celebrate the cultural diversity that is the hallmark of Brampton.
