Regional Councillor Rowena Santos extends her heartfelt congratulations to MDA Space for securing a monumental $1 billion contract from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). This contract will see MDA design and deliver the innovative Canadarm3 Flight System for NASA’s Lunar Gateway program, all from their headquarters in Brampton.
The Canadarm3 represents the next generation of space robotics, building on Canada’s proud legacy of pioneering space technology. This highly advanced system will consist of a large arm, a smaller dexterous arm, and specialized tools designed for various maintenance and scientific tasks. The Canadarm3 will play a pivotal role in NASA’s Gateway, a space station orbiting the Moon that will support missions under the Artemis program, aimed at establishing a sustainable presence on and around the Moon .
The contract encompasses the final design and construction phases of the Canadarm3, running until March 2030. It involves over 200 Canadian companies, fostering job creation, skills development, and economic growth within Canada’s burgeoning space sector. MDA will also provide mission control support from their new facility in Brampton, ensuring seamless operation once the Canadarm3 is in orbit .
“This achievement underscores Canada’s excellence in space robotics and innovation,” said Councillor Santos. “The @investbrampton team is thrilled to witness MDA’s advancements in the space industry. This not only positions Brampton as a hub for space exploration but also supports high-quality jobs and growth opportunities in our community.”
Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “This critical investment in Canadarm3 reinforces and expands our national and industry leadership as a new era of space opens up” .
