FROM BLOOD SUGAR TO GIDDHA: Flower City Friends Club COMBINES HEALTH EDUCATION WITH COMMUNITY SPIRIT

More than 125 seniors attend City of Brampton-supported diabetes awareness seminar

BRAMPTON, Sept. 6, 2026 — Health education, cultural entertainment and community fellowship came together as the Flower City Friends Club (FCFC) hosted a special seminar on “Diabetes Among Seniors” at Paul Palleschi Recreation Centre in Brampton.

Supported by the City of Brampton, the gathering drew more than 125 club members for an afternoon focused on practical knowledge, healthy living and active aging, followed by music, poetry, dance, birthday celebrations and dinner.

The seminar was conducted by Neha Kaushal, Certified Diabetes Educator, who offered practical guidance on managing diabetes through nutrition, physical activity, medication, monitoring and lifestyle choices.

Good Health Means Greater Independence

Welcoming the audience, FCFC Chairperson Gian Paul emphasized that social organizations serving older adults can play an important role in promoting awareness of issues that affect their quality of life.

For seniors, good health means greater independence, confidence and a better quality of life. Bringing people together socially is important, but providing useful knowledge that can improve their everyday lives makes these gatherings even more meaningful,” Paul said.

He noted that diabetes is a significant concern for many seniors and their families, making reliable information about diet, exercise, medication and prevention especially valuable.

Paul then introduced Kaushal and welcomed her on behalf of the organization.

Practical Advice for Managing Diabetes

Kaushal explained diabetes in clear, easy-to-understand terms, covering risk factors, blood glucose management, nutrition, portion control, exercise, medication and daily routines.

One of the most engaging parts of her presentation focused on Punjabi and South Asian diets. She discussed how traditional foods can remain part of a balanced lifestyle when attention is paid to ingredients, cooking methods, carbohydrate intake and portion sizes.

Her message focused on realistic, sustainable changes rather than viewing diabetes management simply as a series of restrictions.

Kaushal also stressed the value of regular physical activity appropriate to an individual’s age, ability and medical circumstances. She discussed complications that may arise when diabetes is not properly controlled and encouraged regular monitoring, medical follow-ups and responsible use of prescribed medication.

Questions Reflect Everyday Concerns

The interactive question-and-answer session gave attendees an opportunity to seek clarification on issues affecting their daily lives.

Gurvinder Lamba asked about suitable food choices for people living with diabetes. Kaushal discussed balanced meals, portion control and limiting excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates while making healthier choices within a person’s regular diet.

Harsimrat Panfer asked whether intermittent fasting is appropriate for people with diabetes. Kaushal explained that fasting can affect blood glucose differently from one person to another, particularly for those taking insulin or certain diabetes medications. She advised anyone considering major changes to meal timing or fasting routines to first consult their healthcare provider and ensure appropriate monitoring.

Iqbal Ahluwalia raised concerns about the possible side effects of diabetes medications. Kaushal explained that individuals can respond differently to treatment and encouraged participants to discuss concerns with their doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare professional rather than stopping or changing prescribed medication on their own.

Additional questions from the audience contributed to a lively and informative exchange.

From Learning to Laughter

Following the seminar, the focus shifted from education to entertainment as FCFC participants took to the stage with songs, jokes, poetry, music and dance performances.

Colourful Giddha performances brought added energy to the celebration and highlighted the cultural traditions that remain an important part of the club’s activities.

The entertainment reflected FCFC’s emphasis on active aging through social connection, creativity, friendship and participation.

A delicious meal was served, allowing attendees to relax, socialize and enjoy time together.

Celebrating August and September Birthdays

The afternoon also included a special celebration honouring club members whose birthdays fell in August and September.

A cake-cutting ceremony was held amid applause, smiles and warm wishes. The birthday celebrants were wished continued good health, happiness and many more years of active community involvement.

“Keeping Seniors Informed, Involved and Connected”

FCFC President Jaswinder Daind thanked the organizers, volunteers, performers and attendees for contributing to the success of the program.

Our goal is to keep seniors informed, involved and connected. When education, friendship and enjoyment come together under one roof, everyone goes home with something positive,” Daind said.

She said the turnout of more than 125 participants demonstrated the value of programs that address the educational, recreational and social interests of older adults.

FCFC Acknowledges City of Brampton Support

Concluding the program, Gian Paul thanked Neha Kaushal for sharing her professional expertise and taking the time to respond to questions from the audience.

He also expressed FCFC’s appreciation to the City of Brampton for supporting the program and encouraging initiatives that promote the well-being, engagement and social participation of seniors.

Paul acknowledged President Jaswinder Daind, the FCFC executive team, organizers, volunteers, performers and those who worked behind the scenes to make the gathering successful.

A strong seniors’ community is one where we learn together, celebrate together and look out for one another. That is the spirit FCFC wants to continue building,” Paul said.

With the September program successfully concluded, Flower City Friends Club is now preparing for its next gathering on October 4, 2026.

Further details will be announced shortly.
