Flower City Friends Club Blends Celebration and Wellness at Canada Day Event for Seniors

The Flower City Friends Club (FCFC) proudly hosted a vibrant and heartwarming Canada Day celebration on July 6 , 2025, at the Paul Palleschi Recreation Centre in Brampton, bringing together over 100 senior members for a day filled with patriotism, wellness, and joyful community spirit.

The event was officially inaugurated by Brampton Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, who joined attendees in the singing of the national anthem, O Canada. In her keynote remarks, Councillor Santos reflected on the core values that define Canada—equality, unity, and respect for all. She applauded the City of Brampton’s continued dedication to serving its senior population through free recreational programs, wellness services, and inclusive community initiatives.

“Canada is a land where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” she said. “We are proud to support our seniors with accessible programs that keep them active, engaged, and connected.”

Mr. Gian Paul, Chairperson of FCFC, thanked all the members for attending and making the celebration meaningful through their presence and enthusiasm.

“Our seniors are the heart of our community,” he shared. “Your commitment to coming together, celebrating our country, and participating in wellness activities is what makes events like this so special. I sincerely thank each one of you for making this celebration a success.”

A special highlight of the event was an address by Mr. Sukhdarshan Kular, a respected senior member of FCFC, who reflected on the five key principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He spoke about how the Charter guarantees freedom of expression, the right to equality, and the right to life, liberty, and personal security. He further emphasized the importance of freedom of assembly and association, and the richness of Canada’s multiculturalism and respect for diversity. Mr. Kular reminded everyone that these principles are the foundation of Canadian democracy and a powerful reason to celebrate Canada Day with pride.

In alignment with FCFC’s ongoing “Health Matters for Seniors” initiative, Anuja Kabuli, a certified yoga instructor, led a joyful and engaging yoga session tailored specifically for seniors. With exercises set to Bollywood music, she demonstrated how movement can be both fun and beneficial, encouraging participants to embrace healthy living in an enjoyable way.

The celebration was also honoured by the presence of Regional Councillor Paul Vicente, who expressed his support for FCFC’s continuous efforts in improving the quality of life for seniors.

“We recognize how vital it is for our seniors to stay healthy and socially connected,” said Councillor Vicente. “The City of Brampton remains committed to investing in programs that empower our older adults to live active and fulfilling lives.”

Adding a special touch to the day, Member of Parliament Amandeep Sodhi (Brampton Centre) joined the gathering as the Chief Guest and praised FCFC for its commitment to compassion, inclusion, and senior empowerment.

“Seeing our seniors so actively engaged in celebrating Canada fills me with pride,” said MP Sodhi. “The Flower City Friends Club stands out as a model of care and community-building, ensuring that every senior is valued and included.”

The afternoon was brought to life with solo performances by talented FCFC members, adding music and cheer to the occasion. Guests also enjoyed delicious food, participated in lively Bhangra dancing, and received thoughtful gifts, all of which contributed to a warm, festive, and inclusive atmosphere.

The celebration concluded with heartfelt thanks from Mr. Gian Paul, who emphasized FCFC’s mission.

“At Flower City Friends Club, we are committed to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our seniors,” he said. “This Canada Day event wasn’t just a celebration of our great nation—it was a celebration of connection, health, and happiness. Thank you to all who made it possible.”

This joyful Canada Day celebration once again highlighted FCFC’s dedication to empowering seniors, promoting wellness, and building a community where every member feels respected and included.
