A flood watch has been issued for the cities of Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon following significant rainfall and rising water levels across the region.
The advisory was issued by Credit Valley Conservation, which monitors rivers, creeks and natural water systems throughout Peel Region and surrounding communities. The organization has warned that conditions near rivers, urban streams, bridges, culverts and dams may become dangerous as additional rainfall is expected.
According to the advisory, a strong low-pressure weather system moved through the watershed bringing between 15 and 30 millimetres of rain, along with localized thunderstorms. Another round of rainfall, possibly bringing an additional 20 to 30 millimetres, is expected to continue into Wednesday. Areas affected by thunderstorms could receive even higher amounts.
With the ground already saturated, water levels in the Credit River and its tributaries have risen significantly. In some locations, including sections of the Lower Credit River and West Credit River, water levels have exceeded normal bank levels, increasing the risk of localized flooding.
Residents are strongly advised to stay away from all watercourses and exercise caution around trails, bridges, ponds and low-lying areas. Parents are urged to keep children and pets away from creeks and streams during this period of unstable weather.
The flood watch remains in effect through Thursday or until further notice. Local officials continue to monitor the situation closely and residents are encouraged to remain alert and follow weather updates as conditions may change quickly.
