Five Brampton Residents Face 150 Charges as Peel Police Seize 11 Guns in Major Operation

A routine traffic stop by Peel Regional Police has uncovered a significant illegal firearms and drug trafficking operation, leading to the seizure of 11 guns and over 150 charges against five Brampton residents, police revealed at a press conference on Monday.

The investigation, dubbed Project Sledgehammer, began in July when a 20-year-old man was arrested, charged, and conditionally released following a traffic stop. According to Det. Sgt. Chris Fiore, head of Peel’s gun and gangs unit, further investigation into the man’s associates exposed a group allegedly dealing in illegal firearms and drugs across Peel Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Significant Seizures in Multi-location Raids

Search warrants were executed at three residences in Brampton, one in Waterloo, and a storage facility in Caledon. Police seized:

  • 11 firearms, including a submachine gun, multiple assault rifles, and several handguns.
  • Over 900 rounds of ammunition.
  • $20,000 worth of cocaine and other illegal substances.
  • 53 Glock selector switches, devices that can convert semi-automatic handguns into fully automatic weapons.

Among the seized firearms, police traced four to the U.S., while five were obtained within Canada, including two previously reported stolen. Two other firearms remain untraceable, police said.

Alarming Rise in Gun Violence and Concerns Raised

Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich highlighted the sharp increase in gun violence in the region. He stated that Peel police have recovered more guns in the first nine months of 2024 than in all of 2023. The Deputy Chief reported 119 shootings in 2024 so far, reflecting an 80% rise compared to the same period last year.

Adding to the concern, Milinovich noted that nearly half of the individuals charged with violent crimes this year had been previously arrested and released on bail or other conditional measures.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized the role of U.S.-sourced firearms in Ontario’s illegal gun trade. “The widespread availability of illegal firearms represents an immediate and serious threat to the safety of our community,” Duraiappah said, highlighting the ripple effect of gun violence on residents’ perception of safety.

Individuals Facing Charges

The accused individuals from Brampton are:

  • Navdeep Nagra, 20
  • Ravneet Nagra, 22
  • Narinder Nagra, 61
  • Ranveer Araich, 20
  • Pavneet Nahal, 21

They are facing numerous charges related to illegal firearm possession, drug trafficking, and other offenses.

Peel Regional Police reiterated their commitment to combating illegal gun activity and urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

For further details, Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah and Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich encourage residents to remain informed and proactive about community safety concerns.
