Federal Liberals Confirm $106 Million for Brampton LRT Tunnel Ahead of Election

The federal Liberal government has reaffirmed its commitment to provide $106 million in funding for the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) tunnel extension into downtown Brampton. This funding announcement comes just days before a federal election call, emphasizing the government’s support for transit infrastructure.

Former Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, highlighted the importance of collaboration between all government levels during his recent visit to Brampton on March 21. He stressed that expanding public transit is critical for Brampton, one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities.

The federal investment is conditional upon meeting specific requirements, including developing an Integrated Regional Plan, signing a Metro Region Agreement for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, meeting housing conditionalities, and receiving a completed business case from Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford had already confirmed in January that the province supports Brampton City Council’s preferred tunnel route from Brampton Gateway Terminal at Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue to the downtown Brampton Innovation District GO Station.

The tunnel option, which has been the subject of controversy and debate for over a decade, is currently estimated to cost around $2.8 billion. Mayor Patrick Brown expressed enthusiasm for the project’s advancement, emphasizing its significance for Brampton’s housing development, job creation, and regional connectivity.

“This project will provide reliable, sustainable, and efficient transportation for our residents, connecting our downtown core to the rest of the region,” said Brown. “Thanks to Minister Erskine-Smith and the federal government for supporting this transformative project.”

MP Maninder Sidhu added, “This investment demonstrates our government’s commitment to Brampton’s growth and sustainability, improving quality of life by connecting our vibrant communities through efficient transit infrastructure.”

Minister Kamal Khera stated, “I’m proud that our government continues to invest in critical infrastructure that supports Brampton’s rapid development and enhances accessibility for all residents, ensuring our city thrives for generations to come.”
