Federal Government Commits $104 Million to Support Toronto in Hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup Games

In a significant boost to Canada’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the federal government announced a funding commitment of $104 million to the City of Toronto. This contribution, announced by Carla Qualtrough, Federal Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, marks the first specific financial pledge from Ottawa since Canada’s successful bid to host the global tournament.

The funding is designated to support both the operational and capital expenses associated with hosting six of the World Cup games in Toronto. The rest of the tournament will see games played in Vancouver, as well as several cities across the United States and Mexico.

Mayor Olivia Chow, who has been at the forefront of the city’s World Cup preparations, highlighted the impact of the World Cup on Toronto. “This funding not only alleviates some of the financial burdens but also underscores the importance of international sports events in promoting community and economic development,” said Mayor Chow.

Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, emphasized the broader benefits of the event. “The World Cup is more than just a sporting event; it’s a catalyst for strengthening community ties and boosting local economies. This investment will help ensure that we are ready to welcome the world to our doorstep.”

Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West, also commented on the funding, “This significant financial support from the federal government is crucial. It ensures that our infrastructure and services will meet the world-class standards required for an event of this magnitude, enhancing the visitor experience and providing lasting benefits to our community.”

A recent report from Toronto had estimated the total cost of hosting the World Cup at approximately $380 million, indicating a significant increase from initial forecasts. This rise in expected costs has been attributed to inflationary pressures, updated vendor quotes, and enhanced safety protocols necessary to host an event of such magnitude.

The Province of Ontario has also committed to a one-time investment of $97 million towards the World Cup preparations, contingent on federal support.

This financial backing from both federal and provincial governments is a testament to the collaborative effort to bring a world-class sporting event to Canadian soil, and to showcase Toronto on the international stage as a premier host city.
