A devastating act of family violence has left a Louisiana community in mourning after authorities say a father killed eight children — seven of his own and one related child — in a shooting that police described as a domestic disturbance.
The tragedy unfolded early Sunday morning in Shreveport. According to police, officers responded to reports of gunfire and later discovered multiple child victims at a residence. Two adult women, including the children’s mother, were also critically injured.
Authorities identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins. Police say he fled the scene in a stolen vehicle before officers pursued him into a neighbouring area, where he was later killed during an encounter with law enforcement.
Officials said another child survived after escaping the home and seeking help, while one more child was taken to hospital after jumping from the roof while trying to get away.
The victims ranged in age from early childhood to pre-teen years, making the loss even more heartbreaking for residents and first responders.
Investigators have not announced an official motive, though family members told U.S. media the suspect had reportedly been distressed over a marital separation and an upcoming court appearance.
Tom Arceneaux described the event as one of the worst tragedies in the city’s history. Community leaders said the emotional impact extends far beyond the affected family, touching police officers, emergency workers, neighbours and residents across the region.
The case has also renewed attention on domestic violence, with local officials noting that many serious crimes in the city are connected to family or relationship conflicts.
As the investigation continues, grief counselling and community support efforts are expected to play a major role in helping survivors, relatives and the wider community cope with an unimaginable loss.
