A dramatic carjacking call that initially sparked alarm in Caledon turned out to be a staged scheme, resulting in fraud charges against five suspects from Brampton and Caledon.
On September 9, OPP officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking near Old School Road and Heritage Road. The alleged victim claimed four suspects stole a vehicle, with two said to be armed with handguns. However, after a detailed investigation, police discovered the carjacking was fabricated — the complainant was actually in on the plan.
Three suspects from Brampton and two from Caledon were arrested. Those charged include 21-year-old Sehajpreet Sandhu of Caledon and 21-year-old Gurkarn Singh of Brampton, who face counts of public mischief, fraud over $5,000, and obstructing a peace officer. Apkarn Singh, 22, and a 17-year-old from Brampton, as well as 21-year-old Lakshay Sharma of Caledon, were also charged with fraud over $5,000. The youth’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
This is the third time in 2025 that a staged carjacking has led to fraud charges in the Brampton-Caledon area, with both earlier cases reported in January. Police continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities and remind residents that anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers, with the potential of earning a $2,000 reward.
