In a focused effort to address the concerns of Brampton’s senior community, MP Shafqat Ali of Brampton Centre hosted a roundtable discussion today with MP Terry Sheehan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and Seniors. This insightful meeting, attended by over 50 seniors from various community organizations, aimed to explore vital issues affecting seniors, covering healthcare initiatives, funding opportunities, and essential support services.

The roundtable brought together seniors and community leaders to delve into the federal government’s programs designed to enhance seniors’ quality of life. MP Shafqat Ali highlighted details of the federal Dental Care Plan, a critical support measure helping seniors access essential dental services. He also spoke on the government’s initiatives for affordable medication, with a particular focus on diabetes treatments. “Ensuring that our seniors have accessible healthcare and essential services, such as dental care and diabetes medications, is not just a commitment but a priority. Our government is working to make these services both affordable and available,” said MP Shafqat Ali.
MP Terry Sheehan further detailed various grants and funding opportunities available to seniors, including the Affordable Housing Plan, aimed at providing secure and affordable housing solutions. “Our seniors deserve to live with dignity and security. Through accessible housing and targeted grants, we aim to build a supportive environment where seniors feel valued and empowered,” said MP Sheehan. His words echoed the commitment to continue advancing resources to support the senior community.

Mr. Sehmbi, a representative from the Association of Seniors, voiced a vital concern, emphasizing that more needs to be done to increase pensions to ensure financial stability for seniors. “It’s crucial that we prioritize an increase in pension funding to meet the rising costs of living and healthcare for seniors,” he stated, urging MPs to focus on enhancing financial security for the elderly.
Gian Paul, Chairperson of the Flower City Friends Club (FCFC), expressed gratitude to both MPs for arranging the meeting and recognized their ongoing efforts. He made a special request for additional funding in the healthcare sector, specifically for advancing technology in eye care. “Our seniors rely on up-to-date healthcare technologies to improve their quality of life. Funding for new technology, especially in eye surgeries, is essential in replacing outdated practices and ensuring our seniors receive the best care possible,” Paul remarked.
With over 50 seniors from diverse community organizations actively participating, the roundtable underscored the importance of open dialogue and collaborative efforts in addressing seniors’ issues. This meeting served as a crucial step forward in bringing positive change and attention to the concerns of the senior community.
