A 75-year-old nurse has been charged with sexual assault following an alleged incident involving a resident at a long-term care home in Newcastle, Ontario. The accused, Eliezer Magdamo of Oshawa, is alleged to have sexually assaulted a resident while on shift at Fosterbrooke Long-Term Care Home last October.
According to Durham Regional Police, the incident occurred at the facility located at 330 King Avenue West, just east of Pedwell Street. Investigators say Magdamo was found in the resident’s room, where he was allegedly inappropriately touching the victim. The accused has been employed at Fosterbrooke for approximately nine years.
Magdamo was charged with sexual assault on Friday, though the allegations have not yet been tested in court. Police are concerned there may be additional victims and have released details about Magdamo’s previous employment history. He worked at the Whitby Mental Health Centre (now known as Ontario Shores) from 1989 to 2011 and at the Altima Long-Term Care Home (Glen Rouge Community/Long-Term Care facility) from 2011 to 2015.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case or potential additional victims to come forward. Tips can be provided to Durham Regional Police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 3833 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
The case has raised serious concerns about the safety and oversight of vulnerable residents in long-term care facilities. Fosterbrooke Long-Term Care Home has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident or the charges against Magdamo.
As the investigation continues, police are working to ensure that all potential victims are identified and supported. The case highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability in care settings, particularly for those who rely on others for their well-being.
