York Regional Police have charged a man in his 70s with dangerous driving causing death after his SUV slammed through the window of a Richmond Hill daycare on Wednesday, killing an 18-month-old boy and leaving another child in critical condition.
The tragic crash happened around 3 p.m. at First Roots Early Education Academy near Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive. Six other children were injured but are expected to recover, and three staff members also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the vehicle had been in the parking lot before accelerating into the building for reasons still under investigation. The driver is also facing charges of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
Investigators are continuing to piece together what led to the deadly collision, as the tight-knit community mourns and calls for answers.
