Doug Ford to Dissolve Parliament, Calls Early Election for February 27

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is set to request the dissolution of the provincial parliament today, triggering an early election scheduled for February 27, 2025. Ford’s office confirmed that he will meet Lt.-Gov. Edith Dumont this afternoon to formally ask for the legislature’s 43rd parliament to be dissolved.

The premier’s decision to call an election more than a year ahead of schedule has drawn criticism from opposition leaders. NDP Leader Marit Stiles, Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, and Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner have all expressed concerns, labeling the move as an unnecessary waste of time and public funds.

Ford defended his decision, stating that a new mandate is required to effectively address pressing issues, including Ontario’s relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration. “This election is about securing a strong mandate to tackle the challenges ahead and to continue delivering for Ontarians,” Ford said in a statement.

While campaigning as leader of the Progressive Conservatives, Ford plans to fulfill his duties as premier, including a scheduled visit to Washington, D.C., in February with other provincial premiers. His office confirmed that Ford will participate in a virtual Council of the Federation call with his counterparts immediately following his meeting with the lieutenant governor.

Critics argue that the early election is politically motivated and disrupts the province’s governance at a critical time. However, Ford maintains that the timing is necessary to ensure the government can effectively address both domestic and international challenges.
