Ontario Premier Doug Ford has sparked controversy by suggesting immigrants are responsible for a shooting at Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School in Toronto over the weekend. The incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, involved two suspects firing shots at the empty Jewish school, causing damage but no injuries. Toronto police are still investigating and have not confirmed any motives or made any arrests.
In a statement, Ford condemned the shooting and emphasized that the province will use all available resources to combat antisemitism and other forms of hate. He stated, “The perpetrators of the school shooting must be caught and thrown in jail.” Ford also made remarks implying that immigrants could be behind the incident, saying, “You’re bringing your problems from everywhere else in the world, you’re bringing it to Ontario, and you’re going after other Canadians.”
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced that the city has initiated “safety walks” involving police, community leaders, and local councillors to assess and improve security around places of worship and schools. Measures being considered include shatterproof glass, fencing, lighting, and cameras to enhance safety.
