Donald Trump’s Major First-Day Decisions After Returning to the Presidency

Donald Trump has officially returned to the White House for his second term as President of the United States. On his first day back in office, President Trump made several landmark decisions, signaling significant shifts in U.S. policy on health, technology, and innovation.

Withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO)

President Trump signed an executive order initiating the process to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). This decision marks the second time in five years that the Trump administration has sought to exit the global health body.

Trump criticized the WHO for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic during his first term, accusing it of favoring China and mismanaging the global health crisis. While his initial withdrawal attempt in 2020 was reversed by President Joe Biden, Trump’s return to office has reignited his opposition to the organization.

“We must hold international organizations accountable and ensure they act in the best interests of global transparency and safety,” Trump stated.

Extension of TikTok Operations by 75 Days

In a surprising move, President Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day extension to continue operating in the United States. The decision gives the administration additional time to address national security concerns tied to the app’s Chinese ownership while avoiding an abrupt shutdown.

“I am instructing the attorney general not to take any enforcement actions under the Act for 75 days. This will allow my administration to chart the best path forward in safeguarding national security while respecting the app’s role as a communication tool for millions of Americans,” the executive order reads.

Revocation of AI Regulations

President Trump has also rescinded a 2023 executive order enacted by President Joe Biden that sought to regulate artificial intelligence (AI). The revoked order had mandated safety tests for high-risk AI systems and established federal standards for cybersecurity and national security risks associated with AI technologies.

The Trump administration cited concerns that the regulations would hinder innovation and slow progress in the AI industry.

“We cannot let burdensome regulations stifle the potential of artificial intelligence, a field that is crucial to America’s leadership in technology,” Trump said in a statement accompanying the executive order.

A Clear Shift in Priorities

These decisions reflect the administration’s broader priorities of minimizing federal oversight, emphasizing national sovereignty, and promoting technological innovation. Critics have expressed concerns about the potential consequences of these actions, particularly in areas of global health and technology ethics. However, Trump’s supporters argue these measures will bolster U.S. independence and economic growth.

As Trump’s second term begins, these early moves set the tone for an administration focused on recalibrating domestic and international policies to align with his “America First” agenda.
