Massive Blaze in South Delhi Sparks Large-Scale Rescue Operation
NEW DELHI – A devastating fire tore through a multi-storey building in New Delhi on Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least 21 people and leaving several others injured in one of the city’s deadliest fire incidents this year.
The fire broke out in a building located in the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi, a densely populated neighborhood known for its large student and young professional population. The structure housed a restaurant on the ground floor and a hotel on the upper levels.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the blaze. Firefighters battled intense flames and heavy smoke while conducting rescue operations to evacuate people trapped inside the building.
Authorities deployed multiple fire engines to contain the fire, while rescue teams worked tirelessly to reach occupants stranded in hotel rooms and other sections of the building. More than 40 people were rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke engulfed the structure. Some occupants were seen calling for help from windows while emergency crews and local residents joined efforts to bring people to safety.
Officials confirmed that several individuals suffered injuries, while investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
Preliminary reports indicate that some of the victims may have been foreign nationals visiting India for medical treatment. New Delhi is a major destination for international medical tourism, with many patients staying in hotels and guest accommodations near healthcare facilities.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Fire officials and investigators have launched a detailed examination of the site to establish how the blaze started and whether safety regulations were adequately followed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives.
The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety standards and building compliance in urban areas. Fire-related accidents remain a recurring challenge in India, where overcrowded buildings, electrical faults and violations of safety regulations have often contributed to major disasters.
Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation into the incident as families mourn the loss of loved ones and survivors begin recovering from the traumatic event.
The rescue and recovery operation continued throughout the day as emergency officials worked to ensure no additional victims remained trapped inside the damaged structure.
