Construction Begins on Canada’s Largest Hospital in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA — Construction has officially begun on what will become the largest hospital in Canada, the $16-billion Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, set to open its doors in 2033.

Premier Doug Ford, Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, and Trillium Health Partners officials gathered Wednesday morning to mark the groundbreaking for the 22-storey, 2.8-million-square-foot facility. Located at the site of the current Mississauga Hospital on Hurontario Street and The Queensway, the new complex will triple the size of the existing hospital, which has served the community since 1958.

The hospital will also include the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, a 200,000-square-foot facility that will become Ontario’s first dedicated centre focusing solely on the health and well-being of women and children.

Trillium Health Partners, which oversees Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, and the Queensway Health Centre, said the design represents a major shift in health-care delivery. The new facility will incorporate digital technology, AI-powered data analytics, advanced medical equipment, and personalized models of care tailored to the needs of Mississauga’s diverse and fast-growing population.

Despite being over budget by an estimated $4 billion, according to the Auditor General of Ontario’s 2024 report, officials emphasize that the project is a critical investment in the future of health care in the region.

Mississauga City Council last month reluctantly approved a $390 million contribution from local taxpayers to support the project. Councillors, while united in their support for the hospital, voiced strong frustration over what they described as chronic underfunding and overtaxation of Mississauga — Canada’s seventh-largest city.

Once operational, the hospital will feature 950 beds, 23 operating rooms, and is expected to host 1.7 million patient visits annually. It will also create 3,000 construction jobs, contribute an estimated $1 billion to the local economy over the next decade, and expand the local health-care workforce by adding 2,400 staff members and 400 doctors.

Trillium Health Partners President and CEO Karli Farrow said the new hospital reflects a forward-looking approach to patient care. “We are building more than a hospital. We are building a health-care system of the future — one that is proactive, digitally connected, and rooted in the diverse needs of our community.”

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, once completed, is expected to transform the landscape of Canadian health care and solidify Mississauga’s role as a national leader in medical innovation and community-based care.
