The investigation into the recent attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has taken a surprising turn as reports reveal that fingerprints collected from the crime scene do not match those of the man arrested in the case. This development raises questions about whether the correct individual has been apprehended.
Thirty-year-old Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested by Mumbai Police after an extensive manhunt. However, according to reports from NDTV, the state Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) fingerprint bureau has determined that the fingerprints found at Saif Ali Khan’s residence do not match Shehzad’s. Following this revelation, the police have sent additional samples for further verification.
Contrary to the CID’s findings, a Mumbai Police officer stated, “A preliminary report had shown a match with the arrested accused. We are now awaiting the final fingerprint report to confirm the findings.”
Social media users and some commentators have pointed out that Shehzad’s appearance does not match the individual captured on CCTV leaving Saif’s residence. Responding to these concerns, Dikshit Gedam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch, Mumbai), dismissed the criticism, stating, “The media has only two pieces of footage of the accused, which had been released earlier. We have several videos of him from different angles, including some in high resolution, which clearly establish the identity of the accused.”
Police claim Shehzad is a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally. DCP Gedam explained, “There is primary evidence to anticipate that the accused is a Bangladeshi. He does not have valid Indian documents. Some seizures indicate that he is a Bangladeshi national.”
Saif Ali Khan was attacked inside his Mumbai residence, sustaining six injuries during a confrontation with the intruder. One injury was reportedly near his spine, as disclosed by a doctor treating the actor. The perpetrator allegedly entered the actor’s son Jeh’s room before demanding ₹1 crore. Saif reportedly fought back, which led to his injuries.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities await the final fingerprint analysis and examine additional evidence. The mismatch has cast a shadow over the initial arrest, and questions persist about the accuracy of the police’s identification of the attacker.
For now, the Mumbai Police have emphasized their confidence in the case, stating that further forensic evidence will clarify any doubts.
