Conception Bay North Wildfire Expands to 4,000 Hectares, Crews Face Tough Conditions

CONCEPTION BAY NORTH, N.L. — Strong winds and heavy smoke hampered firefighting efforts on Saturday as the wildfire near Kingston swelled to over 4,000 hectares, forcing crews to withdraw from the front lines and rely solely on aerial suppression.

Officials described conditions as “challenging,” noting that thick smoke reduced visibility and created safety hazards for ground teams. Aircraft from Quebec and Ontario are set to bolster firefighting efforts on Sunday in an attempt to slow the blaze’s advance.

In nearby Holyrood, the situation remained more stable, with the fire showing minimal growth and listed as “being held.” Helicopters continued to target lingering hotspots.

Further west, crews in Central Newfoundland are focusing on the northern edge of the Martin Lake fire. Authorities are urging residents to monitor updates on the Bay d’Espoir Highway, as changing winds could affect travel and evacuation routes.
