Community Seeks Answers After Mother Discovers Daughter’s Body in Walmart Oven

The Maritime Sikh Society has identified 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur as the victim of a tragic incident at a Walmart in Halifax, where her body was discovered in a bakery oven by her mother, who was also a co-worker at the store. Originally from India, Kaur had come to Canada two years ago with her mother in pursuit of a better future.

According to the society, Kaur’s mother became alarmed when her daughter didn’t respond to her phone calls during their shift on Saturday night. In her search, she opened the walk-in oven at the store, finding her daughter’s lifeless body inside. The tragic discovery has left the community reeling and prompted an outpouring of support for the family.

Calls for Justice and Community Support

Balbir Singh, the society’s secretary, revealed that Kaur’s mother authorized the release of information to help raise funds for the family. The fundraising campaign, organized by the Maritime Sikh Society, aims to bring Kaur’s father and brother from Punjab, India, to Nova Scotia for the funeral. By Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had collected over $132,000, highlighting the community’s rallying response to support the grieving family.

“This family’s sufferings are unimaginable and indescribable. They need your support to get through this horrific time,” reads the fundraiser description.

In an interview, Singh mentioned that Kaur’s mother is receiving psychological counselling and is determined to seek justice for her daughter. “She is telling everyone that she wants justice for her daughter,” Singh emphasized, adding that the mother demands answers about how such an incident could occur without immediate notice.

Ongoing Investigation and Workplace Safety Concerns

Halifax Regional Police confirmed they are investigating the incident as a “complex” case, noting that it may take some time to determine the exact cause and manner of Kaur’s death. As of Thursday, police reported no new developments in the investigation.

Details from an emergency dispatcher’s radio broadcast on the night of the incident revealed that the oven was still on when the young woman was discovered, and there was initial uncertainty among staff about how to turn it off. When first responders arrived, Kaur had already been removed from the oven.

Sarah MacNeil, spokesperson for the Labour Department, stated that the department is examining the incident as part of its occupational health and safety protocols. The department’s regulations require that workplace devices be operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications. MacNeil noted that there have been nine inspections at the Mumford Road Walmart over the past five years, none of which resulted in enforcement actions or penalties.

Community Outcry and Workplace Safety Questions

The tragedy has raised significant questions about workplace safety practices. Craig Walsh, president of the eastern provinces council of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation if homicide is ruled out. “There’s obviously a lot we don’t know, but safety protocols only work if they’re checked on and verified to be still operating,” he said.

Simardeep Hundal, a former president of the Sikh society and a close contact of the grieving mother, helped organize the fundraiser after learning the harrowing details. “It’s horrifying. I really, really cannot describe in words what she endured at the time,” Hundal said, expressing her deep condolences and horror at the tragedy.

As the community mourns the loss of Gursimran Kaur, calls for a thorough investigation into the incident and Walmart’s safety protocols continue to intensify.
