Community Mourns Eleanor Doney, 83, After Brutal Daylight Stabbing

Durham Regional Police have identified the elderly woman fatally stabbed outside her Pickering home last week as 83-year-old Eleanor Doney. The accused in the brutal attack is a 14-year-old boy, who has been charged with first-degree murder in what police are calling a “sadistic and cowardly” crime.

The incident occurred on May 29 just after 3 p.m. on Lynn Heights Drive, when a passerby discovered Doney suffering from traumatic injuries outside her residence. Emergency responders transported her to a Toronto trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

The accused, initially believed to be 13, was apprehended later that evening following an intense manhunt. Durham Regional Police issued an emergency alert and a shelter-in-place warning to residents in the area as they launched a massive search using helicopters, drones, and specialized units. Surveillance footage showed the suspect calmly walking through the neighbourhood wearing a black trench coat and mask, and carrying a briefcase.

Police Chief Peter Moreira said the force was determined to use “every available resource” to capture the attacker. Now, investigators are calling on the public to provide any additional information or video footage, regardless of how insignificant it may seem.

The Doney family released a heartfelt statement thanking the community for its support and expressing gratitude to first responders. “We take comfort in the fact that she was a woman of strong Christian faith,” they said.

Police reminded the public not to share any photos or identifying details of the accused, as he is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Instead, they encouraged residents to honour Eleanor’s memory and to forward any videos or tips directly to authorities.
