Clarington, ON – The Municipality of Clarington has taken a major step forward in its commitment to clean transportation by expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network to 36 public charging points, including its first-ever Level 3 DC fast charger, located at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle.
The installation of 13 new charging points was made possible through a $120,000 funding allocation from Ontario’s EV ChargeON program, along with $60,000 in grant funding through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program in 2024.
“As we invest in EV infrastructure, we’re not just installing chargers — we’re building a more sustainable Clarington,” said Mayor Adrian Foster. “These new stations will help residents make the switch to electric, reduce emissions, and support the future of clean transportation in our community.”
The new charging stations include:
- Courtice Community Complex: 4 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- South Courtice Arena: 4 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- Newcastle Memorial Park / Newcastle Library: 2 Level 2 AC chargers (240V)
- Diane Hamre Recreation Complex (Newcastle): 2 Level 2 AC chargers (240V) and 1 Level 3 DC fast charger (480V)
Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria praised the expansion, saying, “Our government is investing over $180 million to expand access to EV charging infrastructure across Ontario. We’re making it easier than ever to own and operate an electric vehicle while protecting Ontario’s EV manufacturing industry.”
This initiative supports Clarington’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and is part of a larger provincial effort to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles, reduce transportation-related emissions, and boost Ontario’s green economy.
