City of Brampton Hosts Free Screening of I Am No Queen to Raise Awareness of Gender-Based Violence

The City of Brampton invites the public to a special screening of the acclaimed film I Am No Queen on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at SilverCity Brampton Cinemas. This free screening is part of Canada’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign and aims to shine a light on the challenges faced by international students in Canada, including exploitation, abuse, and sex trafficking.

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos extended a personal invitation to this event, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and fostering dialogue on such critical issues.

“I am pleased to invite you to a free screening of I Am No Queen, a powerful and timely film produced by Deep and Minu Basi,” said Santos. “This film tells the harrowing story of Rani, a young international student whose dreams of a brighter future are shattered by a web of exploitation and abuse. It is a wake-up call to the realities faced by many vulnerable individuals in our communities.”

On October 23, Brampton City Council carried a motion to host this public screening, underscoring the City’s commitment to supporting international students and combatting gender-based violence.

“As part of Canada’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the City of Brampton is proud to host this event and amplify the conversation about the pressing issues highlighted in the film. I Am No Queen is not just a story—it is a call to action for community leaders and residents to stand together against intimate partner violence and other forms of exploitation,” Santos added.

About the Film

I Am No Queen follows the journey of Rani, a young international student whose aspirations are destroyed when she becomes ensnared in a web of abuse and trafficking. The film has been lauded for its unflinching portrayal of these issues and has been featured at both the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the International Film Festival of South Asia (IFFSA).
