City of Brampton Celebrates Sikh Heritage Month with Programs Honouring Culture, History, and Community

The City of Brampton is proud to celebrate Sikh Heritage Month, an annual opportunity to honour the rich history, culture, and remarkable contributions of the Sikh community in Brampton and across Canada.

Throughout the month of April, residents are invited to take part in a wide range of events, exhibitions, and educational programs hosted in collaboration with the Sikh Heritage Month Foundation. These community-led initiatives aim to foster connection, learning, and celebration while showcasing the values of equality, justice, and resilience that are deeply rooted in Sikhism.

One of the cornerstone exhibits this month is “Challenging the Darkness” at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA). This moving exhibition pays tribute to the life and legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a fearless human rights defender who courageously spoke out against injustice and became a global symbol for truth and accountability.

Sikh Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the powerful legacy of Sikh Canadians and to celebrate their ongoing contributions to our city’s cultural fabric, economic growth, and civic life,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “We are proud to support meaningful events like these that showcase Brampton’s diversity and strength.”

The City is pleased to fund and support several initiatives this April through its Tourism Sponsorship Program, helping create authentic and engaging experiences that promote inclusion and cultural awareness.

From interactive workshops to storytelling sessions, community performances, and panel discussions, Brampton residents will have multiple opportunities to connect with Sikh heritage and deepen their understanding of this vibrant community.
