City of Brampton Celebrates Sikh Heritage Month with Powerful Exhibition Honouring Human Rights Hero Jaswant Singh Khalra

The City of Brampton officially kicked off Sikh Heritage Month with the unveiling of a deeply moving exhibition titled “Challenge the Darkness”, hosted in collaboration with the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA). The exhibit pays tribute to Jaswant Singh Khalra, a fearless human rights activist whose legacy continues to inspire generations within the Sikh community and beyond.

April marks Sikh Heritage Month in Ontario, a time dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the rich cultural, spiritual, and historical contributions of the Sikh community. The opening event brought together local leaders, community members, and organizations to reflect on the values of justice, courage, and equality that Jaswant Singh Khalra stood for.

“Challenge the Darkness” is more than an exhibition—it is a call to remember the power of truth and the importance of standing up for human rights, even in the face of adversity. Khalra’s story of courage during a dark chapter in history stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of our shared responsibility to speak out against injustice.

Throughout the month, the Sikh Heritage Month Foundation will be presenting a wide range of community events, educational programs, and artistic showcases designed to bring people together in celebration and learning. These events aim to highlight the depth of Sikh culture, traditions, and contributions to Canadian society.

The City of Brampton remains committed to celebrating its diverse communities and is proud to support Sikh Heritage Month initiatives through its Tourism Sponsorship Program. This program helps create inclusive and culturally rich experiences that resonate with residents and visitors alike.

“Brampton’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” said city representatives. “Through events like Sikh Heritage Month, we not only honour the vibrant Sikh community but also strengthen our shared values of inclusion, respect, and unity.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the PAMA exhibition and take part in upcoming Sikh Heritage Month events happening across the city. These moments of reflection, recognition, and celebration are essential in building a stronger, more connected Brampton.
