Mississauga city councillors are considering stricter measures to address vehicles parked on streets during snowstorms, which impede snow-clearing operations. A motion proposed by Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden recommends towing illegally parked vehicles after a single parking ticket is issued during winter storms. Currently, the city’s bylaws permit towing only after three tickets have been issued. This proposal aims to enhance the efficiency of snow removal and ensure safer road conditions for residents.
The motion highlights that vehicles left on roads during and immediately following winter storm events negatively impact the efficiency and cost of the city’s snow-clearing operations, potentially hindering property owners’ access to and from affected streets. The proposed policy would authorize towing after one penalty notice is issued to any illegally parked vehicle obstructing snow removal efforts.
City bylaw enforcement reported issuing 1,583 tickets between last Friday and Monday to vehicles parked on roadways during snow-clearing operations. Residents are encouraged to remove parked vehicles from streets during snowfall to facilitate efficient snow removal and avoid penalties.
The motion is scheduled for discussion at the upcoming city council meeting next Wednesday.
