Charmaine Williams Praises Mississauga’s Black History Month Initiatives: A Month of Appreciation and Empowerment”

City partners with Black Caucus Alliance to honor Black contributions and foster inclusivity.

The City of Mississauga is proud to announce a month-long celebration of Black History Month, featuring dozens of events, exhibits, and activities designed to educate, appreciate, and celebrate the profound contributions of Black communities locally and globally.

“Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Black communities in Mississauga and beyond, listen to their stories, and learn more about their history and contributions to Canadian society,” said city officials in a statement.

In partnership with the Black Caucus Alliance, a group of Black community members advising the mayor on issues affecting Black communities, Mississauga will host a variety of engaging activities throughout February. These include:

  • Library Author Talks and Storytelling: Featuring Black authors and their works.
  • Music Playlists: Highlighting local Black artists and musicians.
  • Museum Tours: Exploring Black history and culture.
  • Community Celebrations and Events: Bringing residents together to honor Black excellence.
  • Sports and Shows: Showcasing talent and creativity within the Black community.

One of the highlights of the month will be the third annual Celebrating Black Excellence event, scheduled for February 28 from 7-9 p.m. at Mississauga City Hall. The evening will feature performances, keynote speakers, and an awards ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of Mississauga’s Black community.

“We aim to create a more inclusive society and bring about positive change, one step at a time,” said Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish. “With the ongoing support of the Black Caucus Alliance and other organizations, we are building a vibrant future for all.”

Shelly Scott-England, chair of the Black Caucus Alliance, emphasized the importance of recognizing Black contributions while addressing ongoing challenges. “Together with the City of Mississauga, we are committed to advancing equity and confronting anti-Black racism. This month, we honor the achievements, culture, and history of the Black community while raising awareness of ongoing injustices.”

Charmaine Williams, Ontario’s Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, also shared her thoughts:
“Black History Month is a time to reflect on the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Canadians. It’s also a reminder of the work we must continue to do to break down barriers and create opportunities for everyone to thrive. Mississauga’s celebrations are a shining example of how communities can come together to uplift and empower one another.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Black History Month website for a full list of events and activities, as well as resources to deepen their understanding of Black history and culture.
