Carney Urges Calm After U.S. Strikes Iran, Calls for Swift Return to Diplomacy

Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling for restraint and renewed dialogue following a series of U.S. military strikes on Iran late Saturday night. In a statement posted to X early Sunday morning, Carney emphasized the importance of de-escalation in the Middle East and reaffirmed Canada’s firm opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” Carney wrote. He acknowledged the intention behind the U.S. response, aimed at countering the nuclear threat, but warned that the situation remains dangerously unstable. “Stability in the region is a priority,” he added, urging all sides to “return immediately to the negotiating table.”

Carney departed Ottawa on Sunday morning as global attention continues to shift toward rising tensions and the urgent need for diplomatic intervention.
