Carney Unveils First Big Five Nation-Building Projects – LNG Expansion Leads Ambitious Plan

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to launch the first phase of his government’s nation-building agenda, unveiling five major projects spanning coast to coast to coast — including a massive LNG Canada expansion that will double the country’s liquefied natural gas production.

The projects, confirmed by CTV News, mark a bold economic push aimed at strengthening Canada’s resilience amid a trade war with the U.S. Alongside LNG Canada Phase 2 in Kitimat, B.C., the list features the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Ontario — which will make Canada the first G7 nation with an operational small modular reactor — the Contrecœur Terminal expansion at the Port of Montréal, the McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine in Saskatchewan, and the Red Chris Mine expansion in B.C.’s northwest.

Carney’s government is also flagging future priorities, including a massive 50+ GW Wind West Atlantic project in Nova Scotia, the Pathways Plus carbon capture initiative in Alberta, a new Arctic Economic Security Corridor, upgrades to Manitoba’s Port of Churchill, and the ambitious Alto High-Speed Rail linking Toronto and Québec City.

The newly created Major Projects Office, led by former Trans Mountain CEO Dawn Farrell, will fast-track regulatory approvals under Bill C-5, the “Building Canada Act.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith welcomed the evolving list, saying more projects will be added over time.

Carney told Liberal caucus members in Edmonton that these initiatives represent “a united response not seen since the end of the Second World War” — setting the stage for what he calls a generational economic transformation. A second round of projects is expected by the Grey Cup in November.
