Carney Joins India and Australia in New Tech Alliance Focused on AI and Clean Energy

Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed Canada onto a new trilateral partnership with India and Australia aimed at strengthening cooperation on emerging technologies, clean energy and artificial intelligence. The agreement was formalized during Carney’s visit to Johannesburg for the G20 summit, marking a significant step in rebuilding Canada’s relationship with India after two tense years following RCMP allegations of New Delhi’s involvement in crimes against Canadian citizens.

The new partnership is designed to diversify supply chains, accelerate adoption of AI, and support clean-energy innovations across the three democracies — a move analysts see as part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on authoritarian regimes for critical technologies.

Carney is in South Africa for the G20 summit, where member nations reached consensus on a joint declaration despite a boycott by the United States. The final statement includes commitments on climate change, women’s rights and issues related to the Middle East — all areas where the Trump administration had previously resisted coordinated action.

Later today, Carney will participate in a session involving the European Union and Vietnam, which is currently leading a Pacific Rim trade bloc that includes Canada and strongly supports rules-based international trade.
