Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from Canadian Open, Joins Growing List of Top Players Skipping Tournament

World number two Carlos Alcaraz has become the latest high-profile player to withdraw from next week’s Canadian Open in Toronto, citing the need to recover from muscle issues following a grueling stretch on the ATP Tour.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who recently saw his 24-match winning streak snapped by Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final, announced on social media Monday that he won’t compete in the U.S. Open warm-up event.

“After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year,” Alcaraz wrote. “I have small muscle issues and need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and my fans in Canada I am very sorry, I will see you next year.”

Alcaraz had a remarkable run this season, capturing titles at the Italian Open, French Open, and Queen’s Club before falling to Sinner at Wimbledon on July 13.

His absence adds to an already depleted men’s field at the Canadian Open, with four of the world’s top six players now confirmed as non-participants. World number one Jannik Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz at Wimbledon, withdrew earlier to prioritize his health. Fifth-ranked Jack Draper is out with an arm injury, and sixth-ranked Novak Djokovic is dealing with a groin injury sustained during his Wimbledon semi-final run.

The Canadian Open, a key event leading up to the U.S. Open, begins Sunday and runs through August 7 in Toronto.
