Canadians Travelling to the U.K. Warned of Jail Time and Fines for Bringing Banned Items

OTTAWA, ON (August 8, 2025) — Canadian travellers heading to the United Kingdom are being urged to review updated travel advisories, as severe penalties, including heavy fines and prison sentences, await those who attempt to bring banned items into the country.

In a bulletin updated on August 6, the Government of Canada highlighted several U.K. laws that could catch unaware travellers off guard — particularly surrounding weapons, pepper spray, and food products.

Illegal Knives and Weapons

“It is illegal to carry, purchase, sell or enter the country with certain types of knives,” reads the advisory, which warns that carrying a knife or weapon illegally could result in up to four years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both. Repeat offenders can expect automatic jail sentences, according to the U.K. government.

Prohibited weapons include:

  • Push daggers
  • Belt buckle knives
  • Certain swords
  • Knives with assisted-opening mechanisms

While some pocket knives are permitted, they must have blades three inches or shorter and no spring, button, or catch-assisted opening mechanisms.

Travellers may only carry a knife in public with a “good reason”, such as for religious purposes (e.g., the kirpan carried by observant Sikhs), for work, or as part of a national costume. Ultimately, a court determines if the reason is valid.

Pepper Spray and Food Products Also Banned

Beyond weapons, the advisory notes that pepper spray is also considered illegal in the U.K. Travellers found carrying it — even unknowingly — could face criminal prosecution.

Additionally, Canadians are not allowed to bring meat or dairy products into the U.K. from non-EU countries, including Canada. These restrictions are enforced to prevent the spread of animal diseases.

“Convicted offenders can expect heavy fines and jail sentences,” warns the Canadian government.

If You’re Arrested Abroad

The advisory also outlines what happens if a Canadian is convicted in the U.K. While imprisoned Canadians can request a transfer to a Canadian prison, approval requires consent from both the U.K. and Canadian authorities. Even then, the process can be lengthy and uncertain.

Travellers are advised to consult the official Canadian travel advice and advisories website for up-to-date information before their trip.
