As auto theft continues to surge across Ontario, a new Canadian-made anti-theft solution is offering drivers both peace of mind and significant savings on insurance. Tag Tracking, a cutting-edge vehicle recovery system developed and manufactured in Canada, is being promoted through a partnership between Co-operators Insurance, Tag Tracking, and Speedy Glass.
According to recent statistics, over 57,000 passenger vehicles were stolen in Canada last year, with nearly half of Ontarians experiencing auto theft either directly or indirectly. As criminals become more sophisticated, traditional precautions such as locking doors and avoiding idling cars are no longer enough.
To combat this rising threat, Co-operators Insurance has launched a public awareness campaign and promotional partnership to make Tag Tracking more accessible. The technology involves radio-frequency identification sensors discreetly placed on key vehicle parts targeted by thieves. These devices are nearly impossible to detect or disable and are supported by window etching, serving as a visible deterrent to potential criminals.
“Tag offers an unmatched 99% recovery rate,” said Tara Laidman, Vice-President of Home and Auto Insurance at Co-operators. “In addition to enhancing your vehicle’s security, it can significantly reduce your insurance premium—especially if you drive a high-risk model or live in a theft-prone area.”
To encourage adoption, Co-operators is offering discounted installations at authorized Speedy Glass locations, with a flat rate of $275 for clients. The system is effective for five years, often covering the typical lifespan of vehicle ownership. Laidman notes that the initial cost is frequently recouped within the first year through premium savings.
Ontario’s most stolen vehicles, according to Équité Association, include:
- Land Rover SUVs
- Cadillac Escalade series
- Toyota Highlanders
- GMC SUVs
- Jeep Gladiator trucks
Despite rising theft rates, only 9% of Ontarians currently use Tag Tracking, and just 10% use Faraday pouches to block relay attacks. These figures underscore the need for greater awareness and adoption of effective anti-theft solutions.
“With over three decades of expertise, Tag Tracking not only protects vehicles from being stolen but addresses the full spectrum of theft tactics—from keyless relay attacks to vehicle revinning and cross-border smuggling,” said Freddy Marcantonio, Vice-President of Tag Tracking.
On May 14, Co-operators and Speedy Glass conducted a special installation event in Mississauga for pre-selected clients who had previously suffered vehicle theft, showcasing the system’s ease of implementation and value.
Laidman urges all drivers to contact their insurance providers to inquire about Tag Tracking premium discounts, particularly those driving high-risk models or living in urban areas where auto theft is rampant.
